Gasoline for Patton's tanks: 1 mile of C-47s loading at Etain, France, April 1945

Air Resupply, the "other life" of Troop Carrier units. The 439th Group marshals one mile of C-47s, much larger than any Stateside airline at the time. Note 5-gallon "jerrycans," filled with gasoline and ready for field use, stacked on the other side of aircraft. This photo was taken after loading for a mission had begun, late April, 1945 at Etain, France, the base of the 439th's forward echelon during this period. Destination: Patton's tanks, at the Front.
