First Airborne and Troop Carrier combat casualties of WWII, Sebkra d'Oran, 9Nov42

9 November 1942. Rare photo of one of the three C-47s that were attacked by French Dewoitine fighters on the Sebkra d'Oran on 8 November. This aircraft, of the 12th TC Sqdn, 60th TC Group, was flown by then-1st Lt. Joseph A. Beck, later the CO of the 94th TCS, 439th TCG. One member of the aircrew and three paratroopers from the 503d Parachute Infantry Regiment were killed on this aircraft. One other aircrew member was killed on another C-47. Note cannon damage visible above the cockpit; note also the feathered props. Paratroopers from the three C-47s deplaned and marched the remaining five miles to Tafaraoui, where they arrived near dawn on 9 November. Shown above is the rescue party that was sent out from Tafaraoui later in the day to retrieve the wounded and dead soldiers. The other 1,600 troopers were also picked up that same day and brought to Tafaraoui to set up a defense for the airfield.
