439th Group's D-Day drop in Operation MARKET, DZ N, 1.5 miles south of
Groesbeek, near the German border, Nijmegen sector, 17 September 1944. Aircraft was on
autopilot approaching and over the DZ, as was author's practice. Capt. Wesley
D. Harris, 307th Airborne Engineer Bn, C Company commander and his stick jumped
from the author's aircraft. Capt. Harris was one of the chief engineers of
the famous
Waal River crossing by the 82nd Airborne Division, for which he received
the DSC. In Chalk No. 3, on author's left wing, is 1st. Lt. Henry L.
Harris and crew of the 91st TC Sqdn. In this stick was Sgt.
William E. Kero, whose heroic actions on 20 September 1944 cost him his
life, and in whose honor a monument now stands in front of the 82nd
