Lineup of the 50-glider mission of D-plus-1, Operation MARKET, by the 439th Group. Destination: LZ n, near Groesbeek in the Nijmegen sector in the airborne invasion of Holland. Crew in foreground near end of glider wing are, L-R, 2d Lt. Bob Sienkiewicz of the 91st Squadron, co-pilot of The Argonia, and Capt. Bernie Parks, Group Glider Officer, who flew this glider on the mission. Farther back are troopers of the 82nd Airborne Division who will soon be boarding. This mission carried artillery outfits, their guns and equipment, of the 82nd Airborne Division. Also included as passengers in this serial were some of the command echelon of the 307th Airborne Engineers, also of the 82nd. |
