Woody Smeck and briefing 18Sep44, as fog delayed D+1 missions in the invasion of Holland

439th Group Operations Officer Woodrow Smeck, far left, at pilot/navigator briefing for the 18 September 1944 50-ship glider mission in the invasion of Holland. This was the Group's third major mission in two days in Operation MARKET. The mission was delayed for over three hours as the dense fog burned off (see photo). Maj. Joseph Beck, standing on Smeck's right, in the foreground, led the mission and was shot down (see photo).
