IX TCC units flew six glider
missions in
NEPTUNE. Four of these were flown on D-Day, and three of those landed in
darkness. The remaining two were flown in daylight on the next day. The
glider missions brought in troopers, artillery, ammunition, explosives and other
supplies. Glider pilots on the night missions suffered 20 percent casualties, due
largely to a combination of
darkness and communications problems. TC personnel on the planning staff opposed night
glider missions, and after Normandy, no more were flown in Allied mass airborne
assaults. Photo above shows Waco and Horsa gliders in Normandy fields
bordered by hedgerows.
