Col. C.H. Young with C-47 load gasoline for Patton's tanks, 17Apr45

Col. Charles H. Young on an improvised grass landing strip after he and his crew unloaded their C-47 full of jerrycans for U.S. tanks near Jena, Germany, 17 April 1945. Shortly, as soon as crews at the end of the serial finished unloading, the C-47s tookoff. Just a few minutes after this serial was out of sight, two Messerschmitt Bf 109s came across this field and strafed the gasoline, setting much of it on fire. Many resupply missions to the Front were classified as combat missions.
