862, shot down, on the LZ in Bastogne, Battle of the Bulge

C-47, 42-100862, Ain't Missbehavin', shot down after delivering its glider loaded with 155mm artillery ammunition to Americans under siege in Bastogne, 27 December 1944 in the Battle of the Bulge. On this mission, 26 percent of the aircraft were shot down as an out-of-date 50th TC Wing route brought the serial in over concentrated German artillery positions that had been in place for two days. This aircraft was flown by Capt. Ernest Turner and crew, of the 94th TC Sqdn. Despite their losses, TC power and glider pilots, all from the 439th and 440th TC Groups, combined to get 70 percent of the ammunition on the LZ or in position to be recovered by American troops.
